The Story Hidden on your Dinner Plate

December 8, 2014 By Melissa Shanhun 14 Comments

Today I've invited my friend Dani (aka Scrapper on the Street) to share a guest post with you, about something that's both essential to life, and a lot of fun! FOOD

The Story Hidden on your Dinner PlateFood photography is becoming quite the trend, you’ll see people snapping photos of their plates in restaurants and I don’t know about yours but my Instagram feed is full of yummy food photos. But why is it important to snap photos of what you eat? It’s simple – there are stories and meanings hidden in our food – that’s right your food is not just food check under the mashed potatoes – there are stories in there!

Food is the great connector among people, we use food to celebrate, we use food to cheer up friends in need, a bowl of chicken soup helps you get well, at work we often use food related events and outings as group bonding experiences and during the holidays friends and family members gather in the kitchen to prepare festive meals and to bake amazing cookies and treats!

I snap photos of all kinds of food and sometimes they just end up on the cutting room floor so to speak but sometimes I’m glad I’ve captured something extra delicious or extra special like my mom’s cassatta cake pictured in this layout. If I didn’t make a point to capture this cake I wouldn’t have it to document my absolute favorite holiday dessert. Now I can look at this page and see not only my scrappy work but I’m transported to mom’s house where me, my mom and sister worked together to put make this cake. Each night we enjoyed a piece around the dining room table as we chatted about numerous topics and memories. It is a tangible reminder of home for the holidays and a spotlight on my favorite dessert not just at Christmas but of all time.
I’m passionate about food photos and that is why I hope to spread the merriment and yumminess with Insta-Food: Christmas Edition.

This follow-up to the original Insta-Food will focus on the foods we eat during Christmas and New Year’s.

The foods we are eating this year and the foods we ate in our past. We are going to sift through the ingredients and find the deeper meanings and stories which just might surprise you.

Along the way we’ll share recipes, pages, projects and ideas for food related gifts and traditions to add to your home. Ready to join me on this food adventure simply click here and use code SCRAPFANS to save $10!

Love ALL foods, but never took pics of my meals. Thought it was so silly when people did that. Then I went to Hawaii and my meal looked so great I had to take a pic and post on FB. Now I do it fairly often like when my husband made some awesome buttermilk biscuits for breakfast.

My favorite festive food is the cranberry relish my Grandma used to make. Nobody else in the family likes it, so we don’t have it very often anymore. How I wish someone had taken a picture of it while my Grandma was still alive!

Our Christmas dinner changes every year by family vote, but we ALWAYS have Christmas eggies for breakfast on Christmas morning!

My family always requests my sesame seed potatoes for every holiday meal. I decorate the top differently depending on the holiday with parsley, paprika, etc. and YES, we take photos of it! What a fun class this would be!
