Add stitching to a digital scrapbook layout

July 17, 2013 By Melissa Shanhun 1 Comment

Did you know that brushes can create stitching on your layout? Yes, it's true!

I'll show you how I helped Martine create stitched edges on her scrapbook page.

Hi Melissa

Thank you for a great newsletter & site where I learn so much with your help.
However, I have a request for help & would be most grateful if you could point me in the right direction.
When working on a layered template in Photoshop Elements 11, how do I add a stitched border around one of the mats or elements in the template. For example if it's a grey mat in the template (a psd template), how can I add white stitching around the edge of the grey mat?
I look forward to any help or advice you may be able to give me with regard to this. I'm still reading through all the tutorials on your site & they are so easy to follow, it's a dream for people still learning like me.
Thanks again.
Martine
Thanks Martine for your kind words. I'm glad the site it helpful to you 🙂

stitchesHere's how to add stitching to your layout

  1. Create your own use a free stitching brush like these cool ones at BrushEezy
  2. Unzip the file
  3. Load them using these instructions
  4. Click on the layer you want the stitches on top of (eg the grey mat)
  5. Create a new layer for the stitches (click on the paper icon in the layers panel on your right)
  6. Then you can just draw with the new brush and you'll have stitching 🙂
Or...
  1. Buy a stitched border and add it to your layout - it can't get easier than that!
I hope this is helpful! Let me know if you have more questions in the comments below - I'm happy to answer them.

Stitching is a great accent to add to a project. Did you know that in addition to brushes, one can also use a simple hyphen using the text tool (I think this would work in most graphic programs too), which is great if the program also allows text on path, so the stitching can take be something else than in a straight line.

Another little gem is using some Stitching fonts. Being fonts, they can also be used differently than brushes, since one can alternate “characters” unlike brushes, and also follow any path the program allows There are not many of them around but some are here:

    Thanks Melissa and happy stitching!
