Why You Don’t Need to Upgrade to Start Digital Scrapbooking

Why you don\'t need to upgrade Photoshop Elements

Each year, like clockwork, Adobe releases a new version of Photoshop Elements to the world. This year it is Photoshop Elements 2020 that's all new and exciting.

But, not everyone needs to upgrade.

1. You can do more than you think

Back when I started in PSE6 (circa 2008) I'd been using desktop publishing software for about 10 years. You could be forgiven for thinking I would pick up scrapbooking quickly.

Well, actually, it took me months to remember how to use a clipping mask without looking up the help every time!

As for styles, blend modes and actions? I didn't even try them for almost a year.

If you haven't mastered everything inside your program, upgrading won't necessarily help you. It may set you back a few weeks as you get used to a new interface and way of working.

2. You can create great pages now

You are happy with your pages, aren't you? (Hint: The answer is yes)

Despite our misgivings, most scrapbookers are thrilled with any completed pages they make. So why bother to spend the money when you actually are happy with your own pages. I know many happy scrapbookers using PSE2024, PSE13, 10 or even 6!

And if you aren't?

It's often page design that trips us up. Why not invest in a great class to learn the basics of design? In Digi Scrap from Scratch I teach my three go-to rules for pages that look great every time!

It's just a fraction of the cost to upgrade your skills compared with upgrading your software!

And on the topic of classes...

3. Trends come and go

When Photoshop Elements 10 came out the digi scrapping world was excited about being able to create text on a path.

Of course, as soon as everyone had access to this new feature, the fashion for text on a path went out from mainstream scrapping!

So whatever is the latest and greatest feature right now will probably fade away in a year or two. Some of the newer photo editing features can make an unusable photo better, but the essentials are already there.

4. You can always upgrade later

To quality for upgrade pricing you don't need to keep up to date. As long as you have a previous version of Photoshop Elements (that means ANY version), you can save around $30 and get an upgrade price. It's a pretty flexible system and if you upgrade every few years you can save a lot of money compared with a Creative Cloud subscription.

So don't feel like you have to upgrade, unless you want to!

Shop smart with a buying guide

If you are considering an upgrade Adobe has put together a helpful table to show what new features are available. You can take a look and compare the newest edition's features with what you are using now.

Personally, I keep my software up to date with the latest and greatest version just so that I can stay ahead of the curve. I can also talk with you about your scrapping to see if a newer version will help you. Feel free to ask any questions you may have in the comments.

But for the everyday scrapbooker, don't feel the pressure to upgrade.
